Wayne Gardner - About Me

My influences have been many over the years but I suppose my main love has always been for the singer/songwriter types. People like James Taylor, Jim Croce, Paul Simon, Neil Diamond etc.

As I have quite a low voice many people likened me to Neil Diamond so I played on this eventually putting together a tribute night.

Doing a tribute night in a pub is extremely difficult. Mainly because you may think you like a certain act but when it comes to listening to 2 hours + only the true fanatics will know much more than about 45 minutes (if that). For this reason I have limited the tribute night to clubs where I can put on a full night with backing singers and sometimes, depending on budget, a support act.

I like many different styles of music from Country to Rock 'n' Roll and Ballads to Standards. This is evident when you see my live act. However, I am not a "jukebox" and I don't do every song ever written, although some think I should. Mostly I perform songs that I like from artistes I respect. Well, that's what I try to do. In reality I feed off the audience and if they look like they want more Rock 'n' Roll and less Country that's what they get.
One of the things I like most is playing songs with just the acoustic guitar and sometimes, if it feels right, I will throw in the odd acoustic number. These days, though, that isn't enough for most audiences so I do have full backing, most of which is either produced or arranged by me. The exception to this is the Neil Diamond covers which I try to keep as close to original as possible.
My own songs are another passion. I wrote my first in 1967 and have continued to this day. Hundreds are still in rough demo waiting to be developed and maybe one day I'll get around to them. Others will be appearing on these pages as soon as I get around to recording them properly. Give me more time in a day. (Keep an eye on the "Sounds" page)
